The Holy Mother of God Church (St. Astvatsatsin) in Noratus is a historic Armenian Apostolic church originally built in the 9th century by Prince Sahak of Gegharkunik. It is located in the heart of Noratus village, near the world-renowned Noratus cemetery, which contains the largest collection of medieval Armenian khachkars (cross-stones). These intricately carved stones date from the 9th to the 17th centuries and make the site unique and culturally significant.
Though the church had suffered damage over the centuries, it was carefully restored between 2011 and 2018 by LEVGUK CJSC, preserving its medieval architectural style and historical value. Today, the Holy Mother of God Church stands as an important symbol of Armenian heritage and spirituality, surrounded by the remarkable “khachkar forest” that draws visitors from around the world.
